7 things about me….

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

I’ve been tagged by Liz Smith and David Rogers to take part in this meme, so here goes…

  1. In the early Eighties I was schooled for over a year and a half in New Jersey, United States. I was kept behind a year, I have never forgiven one teacher for correcting my spelling of colour.
  2. On my last primary school report the teacher (who shall remain nameless) wrote that I would find it hard to succeed because ‘I have the World upon my shoulders.’ Mmm… geographer teacher now.
  3. I love reading, I average one book a week (I love history- every geographer should),
  4. Mostly because I’m an insomniac.
  5. I don’t consider myself to be a good teacher, I’m very average. None of the teachers I’ve admired/admire have ever called themselves good teachers. So when I hear people talking about how brilliant their lessons are, or how excellent their ideas are, I tend to switch-off. Don’t get me wrong, I love sharing, ,learning from sharing and listening to others, but too often it can be subverted into a form of self-promotion.
  6. Geography was my favourite subject, but English was my best.
  7. I suffer from an essential tremor, or is that tremors. Many sufferers are accused of being alcoholics! I have only met two other sufferers, both students. Handwriting, presenting with unfamiliar technology and drinking tea are particular issues for me. In fact, holding everything.

I’ve like to know seven things about Catholicgauze, who I think writes one of the best geography blogs on the net.

Thanks…

Fits nicely with some new images from Ian Murray.

I love a quote…

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Part of my holiday reading was Malcolm Gladwell’s new book ‘Outliers’ – one quote particularly rang true with me.

galdwell

Especially as I was doing a bit of active research related to transition, more to come later.

I’m also tried working out if I’ve completed 10,000 hours of teaching yet… another two thousand to go!

I’ve started to collate some of my favourite teaching and learning quotes on my Flickr account.

*updated the quote now- typo.

Some last minute planning…

Wanting an easier day tomorrow, so just putting some finishing touches to resources for next week.

I’ve uploaded some resources to do with multiculturalism in Britain, under cultural geography, think I might update some of the case studies near the time of delivery. Also added a content generator match-up of the main cultural sub-divisions.

I’m also about to finish looking at Antarctica with Year 10, I’m be focusing on climate change, we do this in depth at Year 9, so have produced a Question of Sport type refresher as a starter.

oughtscrosses

When reading the excellent blog of Joe Dale I was reminded about the drag and drop macro that can be used in PowerPoint, as a result I’ve produced a noughts and crosses game for weather and climate, not really noughts but circles, because they interfere with the hyper linking; but I’m sure it will be highly adaptable. Please read the instructions under the notes on the first slide.

Coursework updates

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

I’ve now finished marking the Year Ten Antarctica and Year Eleven flooding 2 coursework- please email if you want your mark before I see you.

Year 11, a gentle reminder that flooding 3 needs to be completed for this Friday. :)
