Week.2 in my classroom KS3 – the league begins..

Nothing much new…

In year 7, we moved on from our mental maps to look at photo annotation, we’ll be following this up with some field sketching.

In year 8 will continued to produce our river poems and then began to map the the World’s longest rivers. I use a video someone produced as a starter, I think it  shows a NASA animation constructed from satellite images of the River Nile, I ask students to guess the river after viewing a couple of seconds of the video.

In year 9, we began to consider the different factors that influence the temperature across the British Isles. Resource under weather and climate.

I have a bit of an issue with place knowledge, so each year run an inter-form quiz between my teaching groups, we have a group stage, a semi-final and a final each half term. We start by using the IQ Traveller Challenge World Game, then move around the continents, using various other games, I purchase a small prize for the winning group in each round and then a grand prize for the overall winners. Well, it wastes some time…

  1. Tony – I also have an issue with place knowledge. Found it really difficult to explore the location of tropical rainforests when no one in the class new what the Tropics were. I may adopt your quiz idea.

  2. Seems to work well, year 9 are now getting over 300 thousand points- this is their second year. I thought it was a little more interesting than homework learn-
