Brit’s Olympic Aussie Taunt…

Interesting bit of cultural geography, what are they trying to say about the British? Watch the full video here.

Got to mention…

the Olympics .

Enjoyed the opening ceremony, but it made me wonder how London was going to compete, lots of geography and history. Interesting selective view of Chinese history; culture promoted by the state, therefore dominant culture. Also displays of Chinese multiculturalism, with different ethnic groups being represented during the ceremony. From an entertainment viewpoint, very stunning.

I’ve eventually come to love the B.B.C. amine for the games.

the Olympics (otherwise G will get upset ;) ) .

Enjoyed the opening ceremony, but it made me wonder how London was going to compete, myself and Miss T texting and discussing how it was all about geography and history. Interesting selective view of Chinese history; culture promoted by the state, therefore dominant culture. Also displays of Chinese multiculturalism, with different ethnic groups being represented during the ceremony. From an entertainment viewpoint, very stunning.

Why do Americans know less about the world?

Interesting little video, U.S. news coverage bucking the globalisation of media stories. Would this be the same for U.K. subjects?

(It’s FireFox viewing, external link here.)

Congratulations

We have now moderated your cultural geography work, over the next couple of days you should be receiving an email from me with your overall mark. Everyone should be pleased, just the exam to go. Everything is now in your hands. :)

Final call… Year 11 Cultural Geography

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

I’m very please by the quality of people’s multi-media presentations, and thank you for those that requested additional time. I’m expecting the rest tomorrow, unless you have negotiated an extension. :)

What does H.S.B.C. tell us about migration?

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Despite the credit crunch, I was searching the Internet today for mortgages. I noticed an interesting new account by H.S.B.C. aimed at migrants to the U.K. .What does the image tell us about the nationalities that are coming to live in the U.K.? Can you guess them all? Of course, H.S.B.C. is also a good example of a multi-national corporation.

Also some interesting bits in the news. Nottingham has been slated again for its burglary rate, someone should tell the students not to have their laptops in the bay windows of their rent houses. Also it looks like a major calving event is going to happen in Antarctica.

Year 11 are reminded that their multi-media presentations are due this Friday;)

Some interesting pieces on global culture…

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

There have been some interesting pieces on the development of global culture just recently, that people might like to use as examples within their newspaper articles. The first is that Google is now the U.K.’s number one brand, beating the home grown companies, B.P. was third. A couple of challenges as well, remember that the global culture can be censored at state level. Pakistan brought chaos to the net by attempting to block YouTube, because of videos that were deemed not appropriate for the Muslim population, Bjork has recently angered Chinese officials with her recent comments on stage about Tibet. This may lead to stricter controls on Western pop music.

Have the Simpsons got Britishness right?

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

THE SIMPSONS: Homer gets the "royal treatment" from guest stars J.K. Rowling, Prime Minister Tony Blair, Sir Ian McKellan, Evan Marriot (all playing themselves) and Edwina (guest star Jane Leeves) when THE SIMPSONS visit London in "The Regina Monologues" airing Sunday, Nov. 23 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX. An American colleague is wanting our help with this question. He has viewed the Simpsons episode where they come to Britain and has noted

  • We use of certain kinds of phrases, i.e. my word, I say, cross the pond
  • Big Ben is iconic in terms of Britishness.
  • We have a dry wit and humour.
  • We are “classy”, everyone wears suits and tuxedos or, when in the Tower of London, are dressed more like the rural people.
  • We refer to women of power as “Mum” (Judy Dench and then The Queen)
  • Theatres play nothing but Shakespeare.
  • People tend to be rich.

How representative is this of Britishness?

Help the ‘special relationship’. :)
