Gordon Brown and Captain Scott, must remember this one for September. Useful starter for anyone doing Antarctica.

Some things I found interesting…

On Thursday Google had this image…

I wonder why. This is another example of an extreme environment. Nice panorama here.

Some interesting cultural bits.

Pre-release Resources Part.5

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

I’ve added a wealth of material to the pre-release page, some of which we will be using this week.

I’ve added the usual pre-release PowerPoint, a link to a Teacher’s T.V. video about the future of Antarctica, the Extreme Environments revisions notes (you should have a copy, if not see me), a document about the uses/exploitation of Antarctica and the potential consequences, a PowerPoint about our chosen physical processes and a grade or no grade game. :)

I would particularly look at revising at least one of the physical processes, you should be able to draw and annotate a diagram if asked.

What does H.S.B.C. tell us about migration?

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Despite the credit crunch, I was searching the Internet today for mortgages. I noticed an interesting new account by H.S.B.C. aimed at migrants to the U.K. .What does the image tell us about the nationalities that are coming to live in the U.K.? Can you guess them all? Of course, H.S.B.C. is also a good example of a multi-national corporation.

Also some interesting bits in the news. Nottingham has been slated again for its burglary rate, someone should tell the students not to have their laptops in the bay windows of their rent houses. Also it looks like a major calving event is going to happen in Antarctica.

Year 11 are reminded that their multi-media presentations are due this Friday;)

Antarctica- Google Earth and Whales…

Friday, December 21st, 2007

Antarcticagoogle Google Earth has now updated its imagery of the continent, the new higher resolution images just confirm the isolation and extreme nature of the environment. Worth a peak, look out for Nunataks, Glaciers, Ice Shelves, Pack Ice and Pancake Ice.

Japan has also decided not to hunt 50 humpback whales in the Southern Ocean for ‘scientific’ reasons, but will still hunt a 1000 whales of different species. This is despite a moratorium on hunting. Another example of how our extreme environment is used/exploited by humans.

Extreme Environments and advertising.

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

This is the one that Tom has talking about, Extreme environments advertising a well known beer, on the website they describe the environment as Arctic Tundra, but it clearly has echoes of Captain Scott.

Drink Wise.

Antarctic Tourism Research

Option 1 group have their tourism research to complete for Friday. Sorry I’m not at College to help you, this post though outlines the task and provides some useful links.

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Gentle reminder that Wanda is due home by the end of tomorrow.

Thank you for the quality work that has been passed to me already.  :)

A great set of Landsat images have been released of Antarctica, read more about the story here. Will be interesting to view these in Google Earth. A nice set of resources on the site as well.

Some random things…

I’m feeling awful and should be marking Stringy’s RE mock, but thought I would do a little blog post instead. The Ilkeston Geographers decided on AQA as our new A-level syllabus, for the new sixth form… looks interesting. Content looks like it will reflective the Pilot. We should be able to provide more information on the course on Wednesday night, both myself and Mr Thompson will be delivering the course. Please feel free to express an interest. Yes, there was talk of an Ilkeston Geography website and blog. :)

We have heard from our friends in Bangladesh, all is well…. I’ve now marked Year 11 coursework, the Severn case study, and Year 10 Option 1 Wanda. I will be giving feedback when I next see you. Year 11 Geographers are reminded that their next piece on sustainable flood management is due in on Friday 14th of December.

Just a gentle reminder that Year 10 Option 2 need to hand in their Wanda coursework on this Friday.

Also picked up a link to a Geography blog that was new to me, Ayrshire Geography, one north of the border and another to add to the feeds.

Right me mocks, you revision/coursework…..
