London

This is a lovely presentation of London, for Year 10 you might want to consider whether this presentation is a true representation of place? Is Year 11 is this a true representation of dominant culture?

On my travels today I picked up Billy Bragg’s (personal hero) ‘The Progressive Patriot’, his response to what it means to be English. A good little read to inform My Place and our next unit on Cultural Geography. Some nice discussion of place.

Billy Bragg is best know for his song writing and political activism. One of my favourite songs and one of his most known…

Sherwood: The Living Legend

Friday, December 7th, 2007

I know that we have a couple of Geographers studying the legend of Robin Hood in Pilot History, this week in briefing Mrs Berry asked people to vote for Sherwood Forest in the People’s 50 million . A worthy project. Also a nice representation of place. :)

One to watch- oops!

Friends of Kirk Hallam Lake and Meadows

Thanks to David, who directed me to the Friends of Kirk Hallam Lake and Meadows, a community group who have the aim of managing the area. A good example of how your place is attractive and how the community, or a stakeholder group, works to sustain a resource that helps enhance the quality of life of local residents. There is a nice gallery of images on the site.

Images of England

imagesengland I can’t remember coming across this National Heritage site before, its aim is to record images of England’s built heritage, might be useful for considering what we think of as English in ‘My Place’ and the ‘Cultural Geography’ topic.

Nice subversion of ‘place’.

Porthemmet_450x250

Fancy visiting Porthemmet beach, (The original site seems to be down at the moment.) looks great and sounds great…

If you are planning a trip to Cornwall then be sure to visit Porthemmet Beach. It is regarded as Cornwall’s best beach by both the Cornish people and frequent visitors to the county.

Situated in north Cornwall, Porthemmet is the largest beach in the county. Due to an influx from the Gulf Stream, Porthemmet has very warm waters and looks more like a tropical paradise than a beach in the UK.

But is it all that it seems? To reveal all, read this article from the Metro and the Independent. There has been a heated debate about whether this is actually funny, given that tourism is a major part of Cornwall’s economy. I wonder if we could do the same for Ilkeston?

Mission Complete…

UK_Boards You may remember a competition asking people to vote for their favourite U.K. cities on a new Monopoly board. Glad to announce that Nottingham came third… even happier to see Derby near free parking. :) You can view an example of the new board on the website. I wonder whether this tells us anytime about the appeal of the cities, or do the results represent the ability of the settlements to mobilise their virtual communities…. one for discussion.

More people leaving…

The B.B.C. reports that a record number of  British people have left the United Kingdom since 1991, most popular destination being that of Australia, I wonder why? The report also shows that a large proportion of long-term migrants are also returning home.

My favourite views…

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

Alan has asked us to about our favourite British views, as featured in tonight’s programme on I.T.V. . So here are mine…

  • Cwn Idwal, Snowdoina, Wales.

Cwm Idwal

I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of seeing the views around this corrie, either from the lip or the headwall, it’s always a pleasure to bring groups of new students each year and watch their jaws drop…

  • Dovedale, Peak District, Derbyshire.

Primary school visit on my birthday, leading the class across the stepping stones, ice-creams, it all seemed ‘wild’ to a boy from a mining town.

  • Nottingham Castle, Nottingham.

Completely personal, and to some perhaps not attractive, I’ve always done a lot of travelling by train, as you approach Nottingham station, the castle (though it isn’t really, long story…) comes into view, at this point I know that I’m home.
