Saturday, December 27th, 2008Finally finished updating my resources from last term, updated the find me weather events task (some typing errors) and added a frontal starter, under the weather and climate page.
Finally finished updating my resources from last term, updated the find me weather events task (some typing errors) and added a frontal starter, under the weather and climate page.
I’ve now updated the weather and climate page to include the cloud types PowerPoint, a review exercise for clouds and the understanding weather symbols task.
I struggled for a long time to find an example or a good chart, so I made one up.
Might come in useful for someone.

I’m just realising that I’m somewhat of a radical traditionalist, I’m becoming a little distressed by the movement from one extreme, transmission learning, to another, skills development with no knowledge. Surely there is a balance.
Skills development, yes, but underpinned by the knowledge and pedagogical science of subject based specialists.
I worry about parents asking their child, ‘what did you learn today?’, only for them to struggle to reply.
As a result, my radical traditional approach makes me want students to know more, not less. So cloud learning for year 9, anyone who doubts this, should listen to the cries of stratus clouds during my duty at break on Friday.
Economic utility this is not… but I think it’s beautiful.
Cloud spotting test coming up…

Thanks to Flickr users- please see the end slide.
Updated rainfall aerobics presentation now to Radical Geography.
An idea nicked from Emma and given a Cassidy make-over.
I suppose I could say that it is linking the visual, linguistic and kinaesthetic intelligences, or I suppose it could just be fun.
The first part involves going over the different actions, these are then practiced, then the movements are linked to different images of rainfall. The final section is performing the movements to the images.
Choose a particularly uplifting piece of music for the dance section, I choose the 90’s dance classic ‘Sunshine after the rain’ by Berry.
Warning- best at the end of a lesson, students highly energised!

Noel has produced some good ideas for teaching about depressions, I’m nearing this so can’t wait to have a go. Perhaps poor Pat will be relegated this year…
