Got to mention…

the Olympics .

Enjoyed the opening ceremony, but it made me wonder how London was going to compete, lots of geography and history. Interesting selective view of Chinese history; culture promoted by the state, therefore dominant culture. Also displays of Chinese multiculturalism, with different ethnic groups being represented during the ceremony. From an entertainment viewpoint, very stunning.

I’ve eventually come to love the B.B.C. amine for the games.

Some interesting neogeography is being used to help people follow the games. Google has produced a map showing the geographical distribution of medal winners and the location of events, even more impressive in Google Earth is a tour around some of the 3.D. stadia. The B.B.C. has its own map, showing stadia and links to updates from journalists’ blogs, nice touch using Twitter as well. Don’t like the overlay though. 🙁

Thanks to Chris for highlighting this map from the New York Times showing the geographical distribution of medal winners and rankings from the past Olympic games, lots of geographical patterns to draw from here and a little bit of history as well. 😉
